‘ONE OF THE MOST ATMOSPHERIC SPACES YOU COULD EVER FIND’ Hitlist THE BEST DANCEFLOOR ACTION*

Five live

As Edinburgh’s Cabaret Voltaire reaches its fifth birthday, owner Sarah David talks us through their ‘Five Days for Five Years’ and beyond

‘C abaret Voltaire is one of the most atmospheric spaces you could ever find an underground club. It’s a very rare music- orientated team that work here. We’re a little family that are incredibly passionate about what we do, and I feel that really comes across to the customers. From the moment you come in the door to whenever you come up to the bar, the staff are enthusiastic about the music, whether it be a live act during the evening, a big DJ at night or the local residents. My aspiration was to set up the east coast version of King Tut’s and the Sub Club with a touch the Arches’ big room craziness, and I hope you can feel the essence of all those venues when you venture into the Cab.

‘For the fifth birthday, we’ve programmed five nights to represent the five years we’ve been open, to give you a slice of the clubbing that we deliver.’ Split featuring DC Breaks

‘DC Brakes are really coming up on the scene they’ve been described as the new Sub Focus. Split has always been about pushing boundaries, and the club is just such a constant within Cab Vol.’ We Are . . . Electric featuring Slam

‘We had to showcase some great home-grown talent, so it was good to invite the Slam boys back. I think we’ve really changed the focus towards great midweek clubbing. It all came down to when I was a student and there was nowhere to go during the week that played credible music. The midweek crowds are more open minded and ready to soak in new music.’ Sick Note with special guests Fenech-Soler (live)

‘I’m a massive Phoenix fan, and Fenech-Soler are

very much on that tip. Myself and the Sick Note guys felt they would be a brilliant live act at the club.’ Sugarbeat with Zane Lowe, Utah Saints, Mooqee and Beatvandals

‘We’ve been trying to tie Zane down for a couple of years now, so it’s amazing to get him at Cab for our fifth birthday and the fifth birthday of Sugarbeat as well. Zane is someone we’ve always admired for breaking down musical boundaries.’ Karnival with special guest Tom Middleton

‘He’s an old favourite of mine and Kev from Karnival, we love everything he does, under all his different monikers. He’s the perfect way to round off our birthday week. I expect he’s gonna be a little eclectic and drop in a few musical surprises. ‘We plan to get involved in some bigger events this year. Our first ones were the Musika event at the Corn Exchange and Daniel Johnson at the Queen’s Hall. We’ve got another few choice nights up our sleeve, potentially something big at the castle, we can’t say much yet, but it’s rather exciting. We’re just finalising our involvement at Glastonbury which will be a great achievement, we’re involved in T in the Park for the third year, and we are going to start reaching out a little bit further afield, at Sonar and Coachella too. We’re trying to see if we can take Cabaret Voltaire, the brand, a little bit further worldwide. We’ve got great residents here and I think its really important to showcase them across the world.’
