How did you get that job?

Name Clare Muireann Murphy Job Title Storyteller Company Self employed When did you start your job? 2006

So what does your job actually involve? I tell stories all around the world for people of all ages. I’m Irish, so I come from a country steeped in stories and oral tradition. Ireland has so much to offer in terms of heritage and culture, with loads of cultural events happening all year round. The Irish love of language is a defi nite infl uence on me. I love Irish myths and legends, and also tell African and world tales. I have told stories on beaches, in theatres, in the woods, in universities, community centres, old folk’s homes… anywhere I am invited! I also give workshops, lectures and classes on storytelling. Best / Worst Aspects? Best: I get to play with people and stories every day. Worst: administration..

Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Clare at the start of her career? Trust yourself.

and nally . . . Tell us more about what is currently going on with the Scottish Storytelling Centre? Tourism Ireland is teaming up with a number of festivals and venues throughout Scotland in the lead up to St Patrick’s Day and on the day itself to showcase Ireland’s unique culture. The Scottish Storytelling Centre is one of these venues, and I’m taking part in its Connecting Voices programme, a cultural dialogue between Ireland and Scotland. I’m performing in an event called Women of Ireland with fellow Irish storytellers Nuala Hayes and Liz Weir (Tues 16 March, 3pm, £6/£4 www.scottishstorytellingcentre.co.uk). Other events in the Connecting Voices programme:

Across the Water: Scotland and Ireland Wed 17 March, 7pm (2hrs), £8/£6 A fresh look at what Ireland means to Scotland and the other way round. Supported by Cultur Eireann. With John and Noreen Hamilton, Clare Murphy, Audrey Parks and Donald Smith.

Tall Tales Oscar Sat 20 March, 7pm (2hrs 30mins), £8/£6 Storytellers compete to spin the tallest yarn, with deadpan or surreal conviction - or even terror. Then you, the audience, vote to award the Tall Tales trophy: a leprechaun called Oscar. A fundraiser for work with children and older people, Tall Tales is also at Aye Write in Glasgow (www.ayewrite.com) on Saturday 13th March. c
