When did you start your job? October 2009 – Originally I was set to begin in September, however I broke my back in a mountain biking accident in Greece. Luckily CIVIC were great about it and gave me as much time as I needed before starting the position.
So what does your job actually involve? I tell people that I get paid to play on Facebook! The actual mechanics of my job ranges on a daily basis. I represent and promote CIVIC thorough various social media outlets; develop digital and social media strategies and campaigns for clients; provide creative solutions for clients online; consult on social media practices and campaigns and present training sessions on using social and digital media.
Best / Worst Aspects? The best aspect of my job is that I get paid for doing something that I love and would be doing anyway. The worst is how new and continuously changing everything in social and digital media is. You have to stay up to date with the latest developments on a daily basis – which is a job in itself. A colleague and myself recently attended SXSW Interactive festival, back home in Austin, Texas, which provided a cram session in what’s headed our way. Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Darcie at the start of her career? To quit thinking so much and go with her gut. It took a lot of trial and error to learn this one and it’s not always an easy thing to do.
and fi nally . . . Tell us more about what is currently going on with CIVIC? Along with other training and consultancy we offer, in November we began our workshops and seminars on social media, social networking, best practice, tools and applications. We hold these events at our offi ces in Edinburgh and they vary from an introduction for companies using social media to bespoke, smaller sessions focusing on tools (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Blogs - combined with information on supplemental tools such as rss feeds, linking accounts, Flickr and YouTube). Over the next year we will also be covering integrated campaigns and virals, Digital Strategy training, SEO, Writing for the web and IP/Legal information and issues.
