Hairspray The London production may have closed its doors for the last time at the end of March, but the award-winning musical adaptation of John Waters’ crazy, camp masterpiece is taking to the road for a UK tour that includes a couple of Scottish stop-offs. Michael Ball reprises the role of early 60s Baltimore housewife Edna Turnblad, whose ‘pleasantly plump’ hair-hopper daughter Tracy Turnblad wins a spot on the local TV dance programme The Corny Collins Show and sets out to win the attentions of local heartthrob Link Larkin. Two solo dance works, Evolution and Mobile, by this incredibly engaging performer, who uses her crutches in innovative, energetic, poignant and ultimately joyful ways. Highly recommended. Scottish Opera: The Adventures of Mr Broucek Wed 14 & Fri 16 Apr. 7.15pm. £14–£62. Dissolute and disillusioned, Janácek’s comic hero relocates to the moon for a better life. When the lunar avant-garde prove to be too much he travels instead back to 15th century Prague, where he is sentenced to death in a beer barrel. Tony award-winning director Stewart Laing’s modern twist on this perennial masterpiece of Italian opera sees Paris’ vibrantly shabby bohemian quarter relocated to 21st century New York. Puccini’s lusciously scored romantic tragedy tells the story of a group of penniless artists and the poet Rodolfo’s love affair with the terminally ill Mimi.
