Mayer Hawthorne Mayer Hawthorne’s thick-rimmed glasses and starchy shirt-collars bring to mind a

cross between Buddy Holly and Michael Douglas in Falling Down. As any of his fast-growing legion of fans will tell you, though, it’s the retro- soaked music that matters. Hawthorne’s silky smooth vocals call to mind classic Motown sound fitting, considering his hometown is motor city itself: Detroit, Michigan. If you’ve got a minute, check out his cover of M.I.A.’s ‘Paper Planes’ at tinyurl.com/mayermia. King Tut’s, Glasgow, Wed 26 May.
