ARTS CHARITIES MEDIA CATERING PUBLIC SECTOR VOLUNTARY EDUCATION RETAIL How did you get that job?

Name Roseanne Sturgeon

Job Title Press & Marketing Offi cer Company Tron Theatre, Glasgow

When did you start your job? September 2008

So what does your job actually involve? Anything and everything; from researching, writing and issuing press releases and direct-mail letters, to creating e-fl yers, updating the website and Tron social networking sites. Liaising closely with visiting companies to co-ordinate individual press and marketing campaigns. Organising and co-ordinating launches and photo-calls and managing the issuing of invitations to all Tron events and opening nights. And after each production, carrying out sales profi les and in-depth customer analysis from our box offi ce data and online e-surveys.

Best / Worst Aspects? There are only two of us in the Tron Press and Marketing offi ce, so it can get rather manic at times. You might have a list of things to do as long as your arm but get distracted by even more things to do on a day-to-day basis. Your train of thought is often interrupted, so you need to be highly exible, able to prioritise tasks effectively and work under pressure. All the hard work is rewarded though by the vibrant social life the job brings with it. The best thing about my job is that you get to meet lots of wonderfully creative and colourful people working in the arts and get to enjoy the many complimentary tickets you receive to attend arts events throughout Scotland.

Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Roseanne at the start of her career? I studied History of Art at the University of Glasgow, but I don’t think I fully appreciated it at the time. I think I would tell myself not to take the experience, opportunities you get and the people you meet for granted. Perhaps try to get some more arts related work experience during my degree. An arts degree is not enough to get a job in the Arts; you need to think about what practical function you will have in an organisation. After four years studying, I had to do a vocational postgraduate course in management, specialising in marketing and a placement in the arts and heritage sector to gain relevant and practical skills to further a career in the arts. So the earlier you can get a practical work placement in the sector the better! And nally . . . tell us more about what is currently going on with the Tron? We are launching our Mayfesto season (7-22 May), three weeks of theatre celebrating new and never-before-seen works which focus on human stories stories which more often than not have resulted from confl ict or political upheaval. To view the festival trailer or nd out more about the various shows check out www.tron.co.uk/mayfesto. Coinciding with the launch of our Mayfesto season, voting also opens for the Open. stage competition on the Tron’s website at www.tron.co.uk/ openstage at 7pm and ends at 5pm on Friday 21 May. The public will have its chance to decide which new play will be performed by the Tron Theatre Company this autumn.
