So what does your job actually involve? My job divides into two main roles. Firstly, I work with the project team to make sure that the learning outcomes envisaged for the new Robert Burns Birthplace Museum are realised in practice. Secondly, I plan learning events which include everything from school workshops to family fun events and adult classes. I keep myself very involved in the day-to- day delivery of all activities. Sometimes I might be carrying lambs or holding enormous Clydesdale horses or I could be delivering a school class - or working with my small team of learning offi cers in planning the year ahead.
Best / Worst Aspects? ‘Variety is the spice of life’ and no two days are the same. Variety is the best thing about my job, as well as getting the chance to interpret one of Scotland’s most iconic buildings and the greatest Scot of all! I feel privileged to work for the National Trust for Scotland and privileged to work with the lyrical genius of Burns. There are no bad aspects to my job, although sometimes I worry that people may not like the events that I plan. I feel the weight of responsibility because it is a rare opportunity to be involved in the birth of a new museum - I hope that the people of Scotland and Robert Burns fans the world over will support it and take it to their hearts. Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Alison at the start of her career? I would say ‘experience is everything’. To get to where you want to go in life you must do whatever it takes to get the required experience. This could be, for example, volunteer work or asking for an internship. I would tell myself to listen to and learn from those who you admire; understand what it is that makes them good and emulate those qualities, whilst developing your own style. Laugh every day, and keep focused on what you can give to others as much as what other people give to you.
And fi nally . . . tell us more about what is currently going on with the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum? The Birthplace Cottage has now been refurbished and the old museum building has been converted into a bespoke education pavilion with catering facilities. The new Robert Burns Birthplace Museum building, which will house the Burns Collection of National Signifi cance, is well on the way to being completed, and we are in the fi nal stages of fi nalising the interior exhibitions, object texts and museum interactive. In the learning department we are also very busy planning opportunities for schools to benefi t from the Scottish Government’s funded school bus scheme, web- based learning, and fun events for everyone. I’m personally very excited about our Burns Ukulele Ceilidh for senior citizens in care. I’m keeping my fi ngers crossed that my dance card will be fi lled!
