Two Glasgow boys blogging about the city’s sharpest dressed residents prepare for their first exhibition

J onathan Pryce knows bad taste. He’s lived in New Jersey for crying out loud. ‘Oh my god! I know it’s not nice to be judgmental, but seriously! Those people are horrendous!’ It was during a study exchange year from Strathclyde Uni that Pryce, who runs style blog Les Garçons de Glasgow, first got into fashion photography. Armed with a camera from eBay, Pryce sidestepped his neighbours in ‘a really ghetto part of Jersey’ and snapped the better- dressed Manhattanites instead.

Back home in Glasgow after his Jersey trip, he couldn’t help but notice how stylish the Glaswegians

My suit? How flattering of you to ask. This was a bespoke one that I got from Bookster, an online tailor. They specialise in tweed blazers and suits. This one’s in Duich tweed from the Lovat Mill in Hawick. The shoes are made by Loake and I bought them from Barnett Shoes on the Royal Mile. The shirt is made by Van Heusen.

AFTER SEEING the work of shoe designer Hetty Rose on display at Che Camille, London photographer Steven Jones approached her to do a collaborative project. The crafty pair then made a pinhole camera out of kimono fabric, a beer can and a radiator key (pictured) then took photos of her shoes, which often feature antique fabrics. The photos have been on show in Liberty, London, but the ‘Pinhole Shoes’ exhibition will be at the Buchanan Street boutique until the end of June. See www.checamille.com or www.bismarckandherring .com/pinholeshoes for info. WE’VE LONG been a fan of them for their tubes of Vitamin C tablets and endless bags of yoghurt-coated and sesame- sprinkled snackbags of pure worthiness, but now the healthnut high-street chain Holland & Barrett want to help out with skincare regimes too. They’re offering in-store skincare consultations until the end of June, and are stocking Yin Yang’s chemical-free range of cleansers, toners, moisturisers and masks. See www.holland andbarrett.com for store info.

LOOKING for something to one-up your neighbours’ BBQ? Make your friends jealous? It’s not about having the best patio furniture or the most bizarrely flavoured hand-cut organic parsnip kettle chips. It’s about serving your meat with a stupidly hot sauce. We like Whoop Ass’s range of Chipotle BBQ, Habanero Chicken Wing and Jalapeno Steak sauces. Get ready to cry tears of pain and joy, gringo. £5.95 for 368g, available online from www.harveynichols.com.

I usually get my hair cut at Jenners but take full responsibility for the beard and moustache.

are. He started hanging out at favourite spots (Pryce likes the Trongate for vintage shoppers, the West End for quirky students, and Sub Club for twists on grunge/ glam), and recording everyday style on the streets. ‘Obviously sometimes Glasgow is too “try-hard”,’ says 22-year-old Pryce. ‘But that’s also what makes it amazing. Glaswegians go all out, and really make an effort to look individual.’ Les Garçons de Glasgow, which Pryce and photographer friend Daniel Stern started in October 2009 has since snowballed, and is about to put on its first exhibition; a tie-in with Urban Outfitters. The show came about after Pryce was inspired by Scott ‘The Sartorialist’ Schumann’s cult style blog, which featured in a window of Saks Fifth Avenue. Pryce approached Glasgow’s oldest dept. store, House of Fraser, to do something similar. They loved the idea; inviting readers of his blog to submit photos. Some winners will feature in the show, plus freshly blogged hipsters, caught out in the sun recently. ‘I’d never want to be a dictator of styles,’ says Pryce. ‘I just like people, and people who like clothes. It’s cool to put them together.’(Claire Sawers)

Exhibition launch at Urban Outfitters, Glasgow, Sat 26 Jun. For info, see www.lesgarconsde glasgow.com
