ARTS CHARITIES MEDIA CATERING PUBLIC SECTOR VOLUNTARY EDUCATION RETAIL How did you get that job?

Name Iain Graham

Job Title Tour Manager Company Axletree Ltd

When did you start your job? I rst began tour managing in January 2007, prior to this I had been touring for a few years as a sound engineer.

So what does your job actually involve? The beauty of this job is that you can nd yourself doing just about anything, just about anywhere, from escorting musical instruments across the Baltic sea in a speedboat to fending off crazed 14-year-old fans during a stage invasion at a crammed Camden Barfl y. But in general terms I plan and execute live music tours and concerts. This means I am everything from an accountant, travel agent and stage manager to the management representative, and often have a technical job such as a sound engineer. Best / Worst Aspects? The best aspect of my job has got to be the fact I get to travel the world and attend music concerts pretty much every night of my life! The worst aspect is that the days are very long, usually 14 hours or more. Also you can be away from friends and family for extended periods of time so personal relationships tend to suffer.

Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Iain at the start of his career? I would say try and make as many contacts as you can and try to build your reputation as an organised, honest and punctual person. I feel these are the three core things you need to be to be a successful tour manager. Almost all of the work you will get in this industry will based on recommendations given to people from people you meet. You are not going to nd a tour manager job at the job centre! Therefore, treat everyone you meet in this industry as a potential work contact. If you can imagine a mixture of The Thick of It’s Malcolm Tucker and 24’s Jack Bauer, you’ll be on the right track! And nally . . . tell us more about what you have coming up over the summer? Over the next few months I will be packing in as many festivals as I can, looking after Tommy Reilly, Pearl and the Puppets, Unicorn Kid, Alphabeat, Wolfgang and The Boy Who Trapped the Sun. Tommy Reilly and The Boy Who Trapped The Sun albums will both be available this summer. I’ll also be working with Admiral Fallow at T in the Park.
