Folk Music

5 REASONS TO GO SEE

HAARFEST 1 The music Covering folk- flecked electro, slow-core indie and heart-on-sleeve acoustic warblings, the Fence Collective have assembled another solid-as-a-rock line-up for this new summer festival. King Creosote, Lonepigeon, HMS Ginafore, The Oates Field, Adem, OnTheFly, The Pictish Trail’s tribute to KC’s ‘bit of strange’ (have your recorders at the ready), eagleowl, Silver Columns, FOUND, Withered Hand and La East Neuk de France are all playing. 2 The shopping Fence Collective and Lovely Pigeon are taking over a disused library on Anstruther’s harbour, and transforming it into a week-long pop-up shop. In keeping with Fence’s homegrown ethos, HaarShop will sell art, craft, design and vintage from the East Neuk and Scotland including Gemma Correll, Jill Calder and Elsie Dodds, plus merchandise from the HaarFest musicians.

3 The art It’s all very interactive and hands-on here, so the sating of creative urges is actively encouraged. During the afternoons there will be art, craft and song workshops, organised walks, a beach clean, a ‘potted sports’ afternoon, art installations from Glasgow School of Art, and appearances by the National Theatre Scotland as part of their Celebrating Fife programme. 4 The eating There is a very good reason for those perma- queues outside the Anstruther Fish Bar.

5 The relaxing While the air in Edinburgh trills with the shrill sounds of a thousand Blackberries and thesp cries, calling you to sample their show, Anstruther remains a haven of calm. Well, apart from the seagull squawks. But it’s the seaside. That’s part of the deal. Haarfest, various venues, Anstruther, August 16–21. Week and day tickets are available from www.fencerecords.com/gigs/

Pipes & Strings Royal Concert Hall: Strathclyde Suite, Sauchiehall Street, 353 8000. 7.30pm. £16 (£12). Evening of traditional Scottish music featuring ‘A Suite for Allan’ conducted by Neil Johnstone; Allan MacDonald and Rob McKillop will perform a duet of pipes and lute music plus Celtic fusion from Finlay MacDonald and Chris Stout.
