When did you start your job? At my kitchen table in Glasgow in 2005 after spending a year researching tea. Friends helped me to choose the name after a few glasses of wine, and my husband Douglas came up with the ‘Bunty’ logo, which was inspired by a 1950’s underwear catalogue.
So what does your job actually involve? My main job is to sell Brewhaha Tea to retail establishments in the UK and abroad, as well as developing new ranges of tea like our new Super Teas which have been launched in the US and are doing very well. I also love working in our tearoom in Buchanan Galleries in Glasgow. I don’t make it in every day but when I do, it’s great to catch up with our customers. We have everyone from students, business people, families and even the members of a tap dancing class, as we serve breakfast, elevenses, lunch, afternoon tea and food to go.
Best / Worst Aspects? Best: Receiving feedback from our customers. We have a cult following of Rose Tea drinkers all over the world and I receive emails every day telling me how wonderful it is, including students who also hold Brewhaha Tea Dances. Worst: Not having enough time to do all the things I want to do with Brewhaha. I want it to be the Irn Bru of the tea world here in Scotland, but at the moment, I’m selling more to the US than I do at home. Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Joanne at the start of her career? Always watch your cash fl ow and make sure people pay you when they say they are going to. Now that we are selling internationally and buying and selling tea in dollars, you need a good bank who understands your business - but there is always time to put the kettle on.
And fi nally . . . tell us more about what is happening with Brewhaha? The launching of Brewhaha Super Teas in the UK - 10 new teas in total. It’s exciting and we have already had some signifi cant interest from retailers. When I launched Brewhaha, one of my main objectives was to make tea fun again and I don’t ever want to lose sight of that.
