7 STEVE MASON He’s been the frontman of The Beta Band and more recently his own

8 THE PHANTOM BAND Chemikal Underground’s finest, most eclectic and ‘most likely to’ signing of

recent years return with the follow-up to last year’s debut Checkmate Savage, a thrilling and truly inventive collision of effortless pop songwriting and off-beat psychedelic rock

9 BROKEN RECORDS Fresh from a couple of line-up changes, the Arcade Fire-alike indie orchestra from Edinburgh power back with the release of the follow-up album to Until the Earth Begins to Part on 4AD, with live dates no doubt following closely behind. Let Me

10 TEENAGE FANCLUB They’ve been about for 21 years, but the public’s affection for the

starry-eyed, sun-kissed melodies of this revered indie troupe hasn’t dimmed. Following the self-release of their ninth studio album, Shadows, earlier this year, their first in half a decade, Bellshill’s most

lovable West Coast indie-rockers return to the live stage for a set of janglesome guitar pop anthems and songs of wisdom and hope (to paraphrase one of their own album titles) to warm the heart. Don’t miss. Barrowland, Glasgow, Sun 12 Dec.

26 COMEDY The 24-hour marathon

shows may be a thing of the past, but comedian, TV panellist and sometime-novelist Mark Watson still has considerable draw; hence, two massive shows, the first at the SECC: Clyde Auditorium on Sat 16 Oct, then the Usher Hall on Fri 26 Nov.

27 MUSIC Elfin Swedish synth-popper Robyn will be appearing at the O2 ABC on Mon 18 Oct. She’s touring to support the release of part two of her Body Talk album series, which includes a collaboration with Snoop Dogg. See feature, page 24.

28 FILM Swedish prepubescent

vampire horror Let The Right One In gets a US makeover. Let Me In has the same screenwriter as

the original (who also wrote the source novel), and stars Chloe Moretz, who was last see using the c-word in Kick-Ass. From Fri 5 Nov.

29 FILM Adapted from a graphic

novel by Warren Ellis (the graphic novelist, not the Bad Seed), Red which stands for ‘Retired and Extremely Dangerous’ stars John Malkovich, Morgan Freeman, Bruce Willis and Dame Helen Mirren as four CIA retirees who have to clear their names after being framed. From Fri 22 Oct.

30 COMEDY Armstrong and Miller are touring around the UK, calling in at Glasgow King’s Theatre on Fri 22–Sat 23 Oct, then Edinburgh’s Festival Theatre the day after, with characters including Divorced Dad and the RAF pilots.
