Job Title Gallery owner/manager Company scotlandart.com

When did you start your job? I gave up an career as a criminal lawyer and launched the gallery 11 years ago. The initial focus was to provide a different kind of exhibition space for new graduates and undergraduates, while introducing a whole new group of people to original paintings rather reproductions. The gallery now holds the UK’s largest collection of original Scottish contemporary art, with prices ranging from £100 to four gures. As well as our online gallery, we also have real life galleries in Glasgow and Edinburgh. So what does your job actually involve? It’s a challenging role, which involves looking at submissions from artists on a daily basis, planning exhibitions, art consultancy and shipping paintings all over the world, plus the technical and administration side of running a gallery such as processing images and updating content on our web site. The most important aspect is meeting the customers who come through the doors of both our Glasgow and Edinburgh galleries. We want to people to feel relaxed and welcome when they drop in. As well as the galleries, the concept of looking on the web really appeals to people.

Best / Worst Aspects? I really enjoy the art consultancy strand, when you visit people in their homes and advise them on choosing art and hang paintings. I get such a buzz when everything comes together and I’m putting up a painting by one of our artist on someone’s wall. Running two galleries plus our online gallery, alongside other activities such as art fairs involves a lot of administration which is constant battle, but it goes with the territory of a modern gallery. That’s why it is important to remain focused on the essence of what scotlandart.com is all about.

Looking back, what advice would you give to a young John at the start of his career? Stay focused on your primary aims and be realistic about resources of time and what you can achieve as a single human being. And nally . . . tell us more about what is happening with scotlandart.com? We have two different shows opening at the Edinburgh and Glasgow galleries on the same evening of Thursday 28 October. In our Glasgow gallery we are having a solo show by Peter Nardini, while in Edinburgh, we have an exhibition of established artists who are showing with us for the rst time
