We built this city on rock and roll . . . After the recent rebirth Niki Boyle vists The City Cafe to find out exactly what has changed. ADVERTISING FEATURE

T he City Café, long regarded as a clubbers’ hangout, has returned to its roots, embracing its 1950’s diner heritage. A £5 kids’ menu and freshly popped popcorn is available for families, while lunchtime diners are offered excellent value soup-and-a-sub meal deals (also for only a ver!).

The party set of old are still catered for with the ingenious move to keep the kitchen open till 1am. On top of this there’s a delicious cocktail-cum-dessert menu, featuring ice cream and alcohol combinations ideal for the sweet-toothed-sipper. The 1950’s diner atmosphere is fun and welcoming; along with the plush booth seating and well-stocked jukebox, the hearty menu features the ‘all-American’ classics, such as stacked

pancakes with maple syrup and a range of over 20 mouthwatering milkshakes and smoothies. It’s not exclusively retro though: paprika prawns and piri piri chicken are two more exotic dishes on the menu. The Café’s major foray into the unknown though, is the Mofongo: a traditional Puerto Rican dish. The menu offers a full-flavoured mix of modern and classic, and helpings are ample enough to ensure that you’ll leave the table more than satisfi ed.

All this adds up to a genuinely unique experience, that will make you wish you could stay for the whole day, and if the owners get their way, you may well be able to. The City Café has hopes to operate round the clock, which will mean that you never have to leave this true gem of an establishment.
