E dinburgh is the hot destination on the clubbing calendar in January as bass-heavy clubnight Big’n’Bashy get together with the masters of parties Electrikal soundsystem. Expect nothing less than a full-on, no-holes-barred night of hedonistic, boundary-blurred, genre-bending music with both residents and guests dropping the killer tunes. On the roster are residents Era, Decoy Roy and Deburgh who will be treating the crowd to the best in reggae, grime and dubstep and who will be warming up for dubstep royalty Reso and dub meister Doctor P, the man responsible for last year’s anthem ‘Sweet Shop’. For those of you who don’t know, Electrikal are an artist collective based in the capital that run a killer soundsystem, club nights, a record label and festival dance tents and in pairing up with Big’n’Bashy the night is promising not only top- notch music but a night of live graffiti, dancers, performers, a laser and light show, jugglers, face painting and some free swag to tickle the punters with to boot.
Promoter Chris Thorpe of Big’n’Bashy admits that his nights are ‘normally strictly a simple affair involving flashing lights coordinated perfectly to the music and mixing, extra bass bins, a big sign and good vibes’, but he is looking forward to January’s big event after working with Electrikal during the Festival which was, by his own admission, ‘off the hook musically as well as visually’. The night is most definitely a musical journey and the residents start slow with lovers rock reggae before moving into mellow dubstep, grime and finally into old school jungle. The rise of this night,
and indeed the dubstep scene in Scotland, is in no small part down to Scottish audiences who are hungry for the music and who, according to Thorpe, ‘give it their all and are shocking DJs and artists who come up to perform from down south. They come thinking that we won’t know their deeper material or their lyrics and then, they get a shock when they see the energy and the love the crowd has for the music when they perform and they return that all back.’ One of the big coups of the night is Pitch Black’s Reso, famed for his electronic wizardry and mish mash of hip hop, hi-tech dubstep, breaks and IDM that has been heating up dancefloors all over the UK and Europe of late. His in-demand remixing skills have been used by Crookers and Wiley and his 12” ‘Ya Can’t Beat Em’ is a DJ favourite in clubs all over the UK. 2011 sees Reso release his long awaited debut album but for now his In Da Mix CD is available on Z- Audio. As a big fan of Reso and Doctor P, Thorpe is expecting great things on the night: ‘I haven’t seen Reso live yet so I’m excited about it. Last time he was in Edinburgh he tore the place apart.’ Fellow guest Doctor P will no doubt be just as exciting. Aside from his own dancefloor smash he also has exclusive access to tunes from Circus records to drop. Having formed Circus records with his friend and fellow DJ Flux Pavilion, his record box is sure to be crammed full of Circus favourites like Cookie Monsta, Brown & Gammon and Slum Dogz.
