LGBT HISTORY MONTH Lauren Mayberry looks at what’s coming up in this year’s celebration of the vibrance and achievements of the LGBT community

‘It’s all about education, celebration and shared understanding,’ says Sue Sanders, co-chair of the LGBT History Month and co-founder of LGBT education group, Schools Out. Sanders saw how Black History Month was being used to promote interracial understanding and wondered if taking a similar approach to LGBT issues would be beneficial, initiating the first of the now well-known festival in 2004.

‘Last year, there were over 1000 registered events across the UK and

interest is always growing, so the campaign is clearly effective,’ Sanders says. ‘We are all volunteers and are always looking for people to help, whether that be by organising events, attending or any other way they can.’ So, what’s on locally? Edinburgh’s Filmhouse is screening Beautiful Thing, a coming-of-age story of two young boys who fall in love on a council estate in the London suburbs (Mon 14 Feb). On Sat 19 Feb, Velvet will hold a special clubnight to honour the Month and celebrate the upcoming International Women’s Day. For something more literary, head to Word Power Books, who will host the relaunch of Radical Records: Thirty Years of Lesbian and Gay History (1957–1987) (Wed 23 Feb).

In Glasgow, award-winning transgender playwright and History Month stalwart Jo Clifford will present a storytelling evening, Our Story Scotland’s ‘Love Out Of Bounds’, at Hillhead Library (Mon 14 Feb). The Scottish Youth Theatre is hosting the launch of The Voices Unheard Project, researching domestic abuse of young LGBT people in Glasgow (Wed 16 Feb), while LGBT Youth Scotland are poised to unleash a fashion show featuring models dressed as famous LGBT figures (Tue 22 Feb).
