Iraq/UK/France/Netherlands/UAE/Egypt/Pale stine, 2009) Yasser Talib, Shazada Hussein. 100min. Melancholy drama set in post- Saddam Iraq, as a little boy and his grandmother set out in search of the boy’s father, who has been missing since the Gulf War. Glasgow Film Theatre, Glasgow; Filmhouse, Edinburgh. The Spirit of the Beehive (15) ●●●●● (Victor Erice, Spain, 1973) Fernando Fernan Gomez, Teresa Gimpera, Ana Torrent, Isabel Telleria. 98min. In rural Spain after the Civil War, the people’s apathy is thrown into contrast with the frenzied activity of bees. Meanwhile, a young girl is alone in dreaming of liberation, through the gentle giant figure of Frankenstein, who she identifies with a young but doomed soldier. Moody and haunting, Erice’s debut is a calmly moving masterpiece. Part of An Introduction to European Cinema course. Filmhouse, Edinburgh. Tangled 2D (PG) ●●●●● (Nathan Greno, US, 2010) Voices of Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, Donna Murphy. 96min. Disney/Pixar funk-up of the classic tale of Rapunzel that is nonetheless traditional to the core, blessed with catchy musical numbers and a plethora of scenes ripped off directly from the studio’s own back catalogue (see Aladdin, Little Mermaid et al). Funny and impressive, but lacking charm. General release. Tangled 3D (PG) ●●●●● (Nathan Greno, US, 2010) Voices of Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, Donna Murphy. 96min. See above. General release. Tehroun (15) (Nader T Homayoun, France/Iran, 2009) Ali Ebdali, Farzin Mohades, Sara Bahrami. 95min. A combination of thriller, social drama and black comedy set on the streets of Tehran amid gang masters, beggars and prostitutes. Part of the Middle Eastern Film Festival. Filmhouse, Edinburgh. Times and Winds (15) ●●●●● (Reha Erdem, Turkey, 2006) Ali Bey Kayali, Ozkan Ozen, Elit Iscan. 112min. Erdem’s magnificent work provides a striking vision of childhood in a mountainous Anatolian village overlooking the Aegean Sea. Concentrating on the experiences of a trio of pre-pubescent adolescents within this patriarchal community, where modern technologies are noticeably absent, religion and nature are billed as the only forces guiding the routines of the area’s inhabitants. Directed with complete assurance, this is a film to savour. Part of the Middle Eastern Film Festival. Filmhouse, Edinburgh. Trainspotting (18) ●●●●● (Danny Boyle, UK, 1995) Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Robert Carlyle, Jonny Lee Miller. 93min. John Hodge’s screenplay perfectly captures the desperate humour of Irvine Welsh’s novel, keeping the episodic structure of junkie scenes for the first half before concentrating on Renton in London in the later stages. Fast and stylish direction, with a creative soundtrack and acting that’s off-the- rails excellent this cinematic blast from beginning to end shows a complex and true understanding of the lure and fatal consequences of drug-taking. Cameo, Edinburgh.

✽✽ True Grit (15) ●●●●● (Joel Cohen/Ethan Cohen, US, 2010) Jeff

which destroys the genre’s traditional notions of clear-cut good and evil, instead presenting violent acts as physically and psychologically painful for victim and perpetrator alike. Cameo, Edinburgh. Unstoppable (12A) ●●●●● (Tony Scott, US, 2010) Denzel Washington, Chris Pine, Rosario Dawson. 98min. Another piece of train-based nonsense from the younger Scott, following on the rails of The Taking of Pelham 123. An unmanned train packed with explosives hurtles out of control, but who can stop it? Slick, but corny. Vue Ocean, Edinburgh. Wallander: Skulden (tbc) (Leif Magnusson, Sweden, 2009) Krister Henriksson, Lena Endre, Mats Bergman. 89min. A young child disappears and the whole shocked town joins in with the search. Sofi’s, Edinburgh. The Warriors (18) ●●●●● (Walter Hill, US, 1979) Michael Beck, James Remar, Thomas Waites. 94min. Stylised gang warfare flick that avoids the temptations of graphic violence and instead lifts the subject matter to something approaching medieval myth: the New York streets are labyrinths, the gangs are decked out in tribal dress, and a dangerous nighttime journey across the city becomes a heroic quest. Moments of humour and a great soundtrack add to the enjoyment of what is one of Hill’s best achievements. Part of Youth Gangs on Film season. Filmhouse, Edinburgh. Waste Land (PG) ●●●●● (Lucy Walker, Brazil/UK, 2010) 98min. See review, page 45. Filmhouse, Edinburgh. West is West (15) ●●●●● (Andy DeEmmony, UK, 2010) Aqib Khan, Om Puri, Linda Bassett. 103min. See review, page 45. General release from Fri 25 Feb. Yogi Bear 2D (U) ●●●●● (Eric Brevig, US/New Zealand, 2010) Dan Aykroyd, Justin Timberlake, Anna Faris. 80min. Yogi Bear (Aykroyd) sets about saving Jellystone Park from corrupt politico Mayor Brown (Daly) with the help of a documentary maker (Faris) and pal BooBoo (Timberlake). Good films for children are hard to get right but Yogi Bear makes it look almost impossible. General release. Yogi Bear 3D (U) ●●●●● (Eric Brevig, US/New Zealand, 2010) Dan Aykroyd, Justin Timberlake, Anna Faris. 80min. See above. General release. You Again (U) ●●●●● (Andy Fickman, US, 2010) Kristen Bell, Odette Yustman, Jamie Lee Curtis, Sigourney Weaver. 105min. Another in the line of wedding-related comedies in which Marni (Bell) realises her brother is marrying her high school nemesis, JJ (Yustman). Sadly the film fizzles into mediocrity as the script fails to move past lowbrow slapstick, despite a number of amusing cameos. Odeon at the Quay, Glasgow; Odeon, Edinburgh. Made in Brittany
