Portico Quartet

When East London’s Portico Quartet (pictured) were nominated for a Mercury music prize for their debut album Knee Deep in the North Sea in 2008, there were cries of ‘hallelujah’ from many corners of the jazz world. Finally, a group of fine young modern jazz musicians looked to be making inroads in getting jazz heard by a wider audience one that might also pick up on their Steve Reich, Philip Glass and world music influences. They’ve just reissued a deluxe version of that debut album (on Real World Records), with updated live versions from the Copenhagen Jazz Festival and Gilles Peterson’s Radio 1 show, to show how much their jazz-meets- modern classical-meets electronica sound has evolved in the past three years.
