WORLDWIDE LOVE-YOUR-LOCAL-SHOP DAY RECORD STORE DAY Sat 16 Apr, Avalanche, Coda Music and Underground Solu’shn, Edinburgh; Rubadub, Love Music and Monorail, Glasgow are all taking part, see recordstoreday.com and individual shop websites for details.

We’re not going to argue with Ozzy Osbourne. ‘As official ambassador for Record Store Day 2011, I now have the power to command you to attend record stores on April 16th. Be there!’ he orders. The List does not need telling twice. Far be it from us to require an excuse to furnish indie pop shops with

our coin, but RSD is a worthy cause for celebration all the same. Formally launched in 2007, it is now globally established as an annual event on the music calendar, with retailers, artists and punters alike flying the flag for the physical format.

There’s still much tbc at time of going to press, but Scotland’s leading

stores are preparing for myriad retail festivities.

Glasgow’s Monorail Music is guaranteed to be choc-a-bloc with aural

surprises and delights. ‘We’ll have a complete complement of RSD exclusives, live music, DJs, home-baking, quizzes, children’s stuff and fun,’ promises Stephen Pastel (see monorailmusic.com). Meanwhile, Glasgow’s Rubadub lures us in with new Glasgow artist

Koreless (Pictures Music) playing live, plus RSD-only releases including records from Floating Points, Flying Lotus and Bibio. They’ll also be doing some special discounts on older records, unleashing a few rarities from their vaults, and throwing in some free drinks (rubadub.co.uk).

Edinburgh’s Avalanche Records launch their week-long RSD celebrations on April 16: they include in-store appearances by Frightened Rabbit, Broken Records, The Last Battle and Penguins Kill Polar Bears (dates tbc) and Glasvegas doing an instore signing to end the week (Sun 24 Apr, see avalancherecords.co.uk for updates).

Staying in Edinburgh, Underground Solu’shn are having a day of vinyl-

only DJ sets, including appearances from Fudge Fingas, G-Mac, EH1 and Spectrum with more tbc (undergroundsolushn.com), while Coda Music will be hosting live performances from Sharon King, Southern Tennant Folk Union and more plus Julie Fowlis serving drinks (codamusic.co.uk). RSD, you are spoiling us. (Nicola Meighan)
