Rachel Maclean is a Glasgow-based artist and recent graduate of the Edinburgh College of Art. She is currently on a six-month residency at the Banff Centre in Canada, working on a short film, as well as concurrently producing a series of prints with the Edinburgh Printmakers and video piece with the Visual Effects Research Lab (VERL) at Duncan of Jordanstone. Working largely in digital print and composite video Rachel creates

hyper-glowing, artificially saturated visions that are both nauseatingly positive and cheerfully grotesque. She is the only actor or model in her work, and invents a variety of characters that mime to appropriated audio and toy with age and gender. These clones embody unstable identities and converse, interact and shift between cartoonish archetypes, ghostly apparitions and hollow, inhuman playthings. Stylistically her work explores the aesthetic of Poundland, YouTube, Manga and Hieronymus Bosch, spliced together with MTV- style green screen and channel-changing cuts.

Rachel is fascinated by representations of other worlds and unearthly embodiments, and explores the ways in which they project contemporary anxieties and ideals into a mysterious and seductive beyond. www.rachelmaclean.com
