5 REASONS

TO GO TO . . . A DAY OF REST 1 It’s a brand new clubbers’ city festival Run by established Edinburgh promoters Nick Yuill, Paul Cunningham (both of Heavy Gossip) and Derek Martin (who runs Musika), A Day of Rest is a new afternoon and evening session featuring a well-picked line-up of local and international guests. 2 You’re off the next day ‘We wanted to make the most of the bank holiday,’ says Yuill. ‘In London clubs are open for 12 hours, but in Edinburgh there’s only really a four- hour window, so with something like this we can really go on a journey through the music we love.’

3 The line-up is excellent ‘We’re showcasing people who are current,’ says Yuill. ‘For example, Retro/Grade (pictured) have just had their Essential Mix on Radio 1, The Magician is a really fresh project from one of Aeroplane’s founders and, more locally, 6th Borough Project are releasing a new album.’ Riva Starr, Spencer Parker and The Revenge also feature.

4 It’s a chance to revisit the Ego of old The closure of Ego and its conversion into upmarket pool hall and bar Hawke + Hunter meant the end of a tatty but popular alternative space. Yet A Day of Rest will once more utilise the whole building, from main ballroom to basement dancefloor to the beer garden (with barbecue). 5 It’s happening in Edinburgh, for a change ‘What we’re doing here is influenced quite a bit by the Wee Chill in Glasgow,’ says Yuill. ‘We’re hoping that maybe people from Glasgow might want to come through here for a change, rather than us always traipsing through there for the big events. We’d love to do it again, maybe bi-annually, but let’s see how this one goes. The ambition is there, at least.’ (David Pollock) Hawke + Hunter & Below Stairs, Edinburgh, Sun 1 May
