PREVIEW LGBT CELEBRATION LOUD AND PROUD: PRIDE IS BACK IN EDINBURGH Don’t worry, we haven’t lost the plot: Auld Reekie’s Pride events are in May this year, a month earlier than usual. Lauren Mayberry investigates

But, you ask, is Pride still relevant? Well, yes. And we’re not just saying that because we watched that Scott Mills documentary on gay rights in Uganda on iPlayer (ahem). Pride is organised solely by volunteers, coordinated by its chair, John

Hein. ‘I’ve been doing this for over ten years now, initially because nobody else was doing it,’ Hein says. ‘I felt that I had to.’

While there will be copious opportunity for celebration, Hein is keen that Pride also be seen as an educational platform. ‘There is still unfinished business in the political sense,’ he says, specifically noting the disparity between marriage and civil partnerships. ‘Things have moved on a lot from when I was a young gay man in the 1980s, but there is still a lot to be done before we can say there is absolute equality.’

Revellers should gather on Sat 7 May at noon on East Market Street for speeches from community leaders and activists. The Pride March will kick off at 1pm, going by Jeffrey Street, the Royal Mile and the Scottish Parliament, concluding at the Omni Center. LGBT choir Loud and Proud will provide entertainment, whilst the Health and Community fair will host several stalls and information points. Young people will be catered for by LGBT Youth Scotland’s regular

event in Gayfield Square. Chitchat and cucumber sandwiches runneth over at Mood Nightclub’s afternoon tea dance, before the evening takes a (hopefully) less civilised turn in nightclubs around the city. For information on volunteering and full details on events, visit pride-scotia.org
