How did you get that job?

Name: James Mullighan Job title: Director

Company: Edinburgh International Film Festival

When did you start your job? Part time in December 2010, full time from 6 February 2011.

So what does your job actually involve? I am responsible for all aspects of what goes in the programme of the Festival. We launched the Festival today (Tuesday 17 May) and it looks like I’ll be doing a lot of press interviews from now on. Best / Worst Aspects? The ‘Best’ list is much longer than the ‘Worst’. I get to shape the content of this wonderful Festival, to put on a show that I hope people from all over the world will notice. I work with some fabulous people, and get to liaise with lots of talented people. It is often stressful, though, and you never seem to get everything done.

James Mullighan at the start of his career? Take comfort from the fact that persevering and being true to yourself will pay dividends in the end. It’s been a long road, but I’m finally here, in my dream job.

And finally . . what are you most looking forward to in 2011? There’s so much. I’m very excited about so many aspects of the programme. I’m hopeful of lots of sell out houses, and that we are going to please the people who love this Festival so much.

At 65 years old, the EIFF is arguably the most important film festival in the UK, with well over 100 new feature films, over two-dozen of which are world premières. On top of that, it always boasts interesting, sometimes controversial retrospectives, short film programmes, panel discussions, live talks, educational and training sessions. With a team of guest curators programming their own strands, this year will fall under the broad umbrella theme of ‘All that Heaven Allows’.
