Godspeed You! Black Emperor MUSIC Considering GY!BE hadn’t visited our shores since 2003 prior to last December’s gig at Glasgow’s Barrowland, this re-appearance at the Arches feels rather speedy. Still, we’re always happy to have some proggy noiseniks in town. See preview, page 66. Arches, Glasgow, Fri 22 Jul. Merchant City Festival AROUND TOWN The mighty and all-encompassing MCF celebrates its tenth birthday with a reliably diverse and jam-packed programme of theatre, dance, comedy, music, storytelling, art, film, architecture appreciation and near enough everything else. Electric Frog CLUBS Unfortunately knocked down from a weekender to a one- dayer, the Electric Frog line-up still has the look of a stonking good party, with Dubfire (pictured), Marc Houle, Karotte, Nick Curly and Nitzer Ebb dropping in from afar while some chaps from Optimo and Slam represent the home team. See preview, page 44. SWG3, Glasgow, Sat 30 Jul.

Arrietty FILM The Borrowers, Mary Norton’s tale of thimble-sized people that scavenge from human ‘beans’ by night, is given the Studio Ghibli animated treatment, and very charming it is too. Fans of beautifully- rendered animation and heartstring- tugging plotlines are in for rather a treat. See review, page 53. Selected release from Fri 29 Jul.

Nicolas Jaar MUSIC / CLUBS The 21-year-old electronica artist is the head of the Clown & Sunset label, on which he released his Space is Only Noise album this year. Labelmate Valentin Stip will be joining him at this Arches gig. See interview, page 66. Arches, Glasgow, Fri 29 Jul. Casablanca - The Gin Joint Cut THEATRE Morag Fullerton’s remix of Bogart and Bergman continues to delight audiences at the Tron before looking Fringewards. See review, page 85. Tron, Glasgow, until Sat 23 Jul; Pleasance Courtyard, Edinburgh, Wed 3–Mon 29 Aug (not 8, 15, 22).

GmbH shop reopening SHOPPING The List shed a tear when GmbH left The Modern Institute in February. Imagine our delight, then, upon hearing of their re-opening at The Lighthouse, Buchanan Street. See feature, page 32. The Lighthouse, Glasgow, Fri 29 Jul.

The Fringe at The Stand SUGGESTED BY RO CAMPBELL, COMEDIAN

To comedians, July marks a time of hyper-alertness of the type a green beret must feel as he anticipates a parachute jump behind enemy lines. July is the month before battle. To continue the metaphor, Edinburgh is a war zone we return to once a year, as our annual tour of duty. And Fringe previews are like the initial storming of the trenches: a mixture of fear, exhilaration, and permanent psychological trauma. Who wouldn't want to witness that? The Stand has a stellar line-up of previews this year; among others,I recommend you check out Seymour Mace, Ava Vidal (both Wed 3 Aug), Tony Law and Tiffany Stevenson (both Thu 4 Aug). See bit.ly/standprev for full Fringe programme details. Ro Campbell performs at Jongleurs, Glasgow, Fri 22 & Sat 23 Jul; Funny in Falkirk, Sat 23 & Sun 24 Jul; and in his own Fringe show at The Stand, Edinburgh, Wed 3–Sun 28 Aug (not 4).
