Claudia Zeiske of Deveron Arts discusses the negative impact of UK immigration policy on the arts in Scotland
In recent years the UK has introduced a new points- based system (PBS) for managing inward migration. The impact on the ability of non-European artists to come to the UK at the invitation of curators, promoters and artists has been significant. Hosts are now encumbered with excessive bureaucracy and artists are treated with suspicion by the authorities. It’s hardly surprising, then, that PBS has led to the cancellation of projects across the UK as artists are refused visas, deported from UK airports because they are not ‘sponsored’ or, increasingly, decide not to come to a country that treats them so poorly.
The eyes of the world are about to turn on Edinburgh with artists from across the world coming to the festivals. What better backdrop for a debate on the detrimental new visa legislation? Over the opening weekend artist Rocca Gutteridge and I will make an ‘artwalk’ along the English/ Scottish border from Upsettlington to Hungry Law. Leading cultural figures will join us in a public ‘Artachat’ discussion on PBS halfway along the walk in the Romany town of Kirk Yetholm. We aim to highlight the effects the PBS is having on the nation’s cultural life and call for arts projects to be removed from this restrictive legislation. ■ The UK Border Walk, 6 & 7 Aug.
