PREVIEW DUBSTEP/FOOTWORK GIRL UNIT Coalition at Sneaky Pete’s, Edinburgh, Sun 21 Aug

Coalition promoter/resident Al Meldrum explains why they booked Girl Unit for this year’s Festival: ‘I was first introduced to the sounds of Girl Unit late last year through my friend Bartosz who, along with myself, has been Coalition’s long standing resident since the night started three and a half years ago. Bart has a habit of coming down to Sneaky’s on a Sunday with new music, much of which are his own productions, which blow me away and this time a tune called ‘Wut’ made me stand up and take notice. ‘A few days later I’d scoured the web for Girl Unit’s back catalogue

and bought almost all of it. Personally, Girl Unit and artists like Bok Bok, L-Vis 1990 and Canblaster offered an antidote to a dubstep sound that had been pushed to such extremes that it seemed like new releases had spiralled into a battle to sound the most filthy, bassy and outright radge.

‘What’s exciting to me is what seems to be the re-emergence of

house music in this scene, fused with elements of dubstep, electronica and two step-garage to create something unique and credible without sounding like every tune was made to rattle your brain cells. Usually I’m a bit of a stress pot about guest nights I put on but I have no worries about this one. Girl Unit on the 21st is a sure thing!’ Sneaky Pete’s, 225 1757, Sun 21 Aug, 11pm-5am, £3 (members free).
