Doing some analysis of other publications’ star ratings last week we discovered that, at that midway point,The Listwas the toughest reviewer at the Edinburgh Festival, giving the fewest stars on average. I was quite pleased about this, which might sound cold, but I don’t believe it’s necessarily true to say that the Fringe as a whole is helped by abundant four- and five-star reviews. The Festival continues to expand only because punters are willing to return. With limited funds people are more likely to come back if they can identify what is really worth seeing. It’s a task that is made much easier when a four-star review means, ‘absolutely brilliant’ and a five-star review genuinely means, ‘move oceans to get a ticket’. For that reason, I think it’s worth treating the Fringe with a bit of tough love.
