Crate DIGGING

The closure of the Art School Union for renovation was bad news for Glasgow clubbing, but at least the city’s oldest club night has survived in a new venue. ANDREW DIVINE accepts the tricky challenge of choosing six of Divine’s best.

Divine’s summer vacation has been a perfect opportunity to stockpile some new (old) vinyl ammo aimed straight at the dancefloor. These recent 7” excavations are all awaiting their debut Divine spins at The Admiral, beginning with Tangerine Peel ‘Solid Gold Mountain’ (CBS, 1968), a fantastic, brassy mod-pop stomper based around Alan ‘Mohawk’ Hawkshaw’s Hammond organ. Cooling things down a bit is The Terrible Frankie Nieves ‘True Love’ (Speed), a mid-tempo Latin- infused vocal cut, which is currently a massive track on the Northern Soul scene.

Judy Clay ‘Do You Think That’s Right’ (Ember) is an out-and-out R&B stomper, and that’s real R&B. Judy sounds rightly pissed off with her wayward cad of a man in the vocal, and it’s got a great harmonica solo too. After that, there’s always a point in the night when only a bit of reggae will hit the spot, and Marcia Griffiths ‘Feel Like Jumping’ (Coxsone, 1968) is an all-time rocksteady classic. Then some more garage punk with The Hunters ‘Russian Spy & I’ (RCA, 1966). They’re actually a Dutch group, and this track features perhaps the only freakbeat-Cossack-acid solo ever committed to wax.

One more funky reggae cut awaiting a spin is Laurel Aitken ‘Reggae 69’ (Nu Neat, 1969), a Jamaican re-working of James Brown’s ‘Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose’. The bassline sounds like it could blow speakers and minds. I can hardly wait! (interview by David Pollock) Divine!, Admiral Bar, Glasgow, Sat 24 Sep.
