A Lonely Place to Die (15) ●●●●● (Julian Gilbey, UK, 2011) Melissa George, Sean Harris, Ed Speelers. 99min. A tense and riveting Brit-thiller that makes full use of the Scottish landscape, imbuing it with both beauty and terror as a group of climbers become embroiled in a brutal game of cat and mouse in the mountains. George is charismatic as the leader of the climbers, Harris makes for a suitably nasty villain, and the only let-down comes when momentum is lost as the action returns to civilisation. Selected release. Looking for Eric (15) ●●●●● (Ken Loach, UK, 2009) Steve Evets, Eric Cantona, Stephanie Bishop. 146min. Shot without frills, this sentimental, feel good comedy is much less conspicuously political than Loach’s previous films. It centres upon protagonist Eric Bishop (Evets), a middle-aged Mancunian postman, who is prone to panic attacks. Broadly entertaining adaptation of David Nicholls’ much loved novel about student pals and almost lovers Emma (Hathaway) and Dexter (Sturgess). An Education director Sherfig sacrifices a lot of the book’s charm and incidental detail for a kind of kaleidoscopic sweep through the last twenty years but it’s still enjoyable. General release.
