Crate DIGGING

Underground house and techno nights No Strings Attached heads along the M8 for its first Glasgow date. Debut guest DEETRON, aka Sam Geiser, tells us what gets him moving.

Scuba ‘Adrenalin’ (Hotflush Recordings) has been a constant in my set since I got it a few weeks ago, because the crowd reactions are always amazing. The combination of Detroit-ish bassline, euphoric pads and the vocal works beautifully, it’s a real anthem. Next is Redshape ‘Goom’ (Running Back), which really represents the essentials of the Redshape sound. The percussion of just cowbell, snare and shaker is sparse, and leaves the necessary space for the bassline to work its magic. It’s warehouse rave music for 2011.

It’s all about the driving, rolling bassline on Simon Garcia ‘Tears in Vain’ (Perspectiv), paired with an arrangement which leaves nothing wanting. A smart build-up, laser-gun sounds and shuffling 909 hi-hats lead the way to a drop into nowhere just before the bass kicks in, then the track builds towards its finale with an outer space vocal chorus. I was blown away by BNJMN’s debut album for Rush Hour earlier this year so I was really excited when I got the promo for his new mini LP in my inbox. BNJMN ‘Keep the Power Out’ (Rush Hour DC) is based on a hypnotic vocal loop which is repeated throughout the track, I love its dreamy atmosphere and the little doses of sub-bass.

A tiny bit of shameless self- promotion finally, but I really had to include Gerd ‘Palm Leaves (Deetron remix)’ (Clone) in my selection as I’ve been playing it in my sets for a long time. It was a real pleasure to remix, working with the beautiful original and its excellent vocal parts, and the package comes with an amazing Larry Heard remix as well. (David Pollock) No Strings Attached at Chambre69, Glasgow, Sat 5 Nov.
