PREVIEW THEATRE STRANGE HUNGERS Wry send up of gay icons past at Glasgay!

Who were the gay icons of your youth? Wham? George Takei? Rosie O’Donnell . . . ? Everyone has at least one (perhaps strange) LGBT celeb that they looked up to as an alternative youngster and what do you get if you combine this wry look at ‘back in the day’ with one ukulele and a whole lot of gags? Strange Hungers at this year’s Glasgay! ‘There’s not a lesbian version of Priscilla Queen of the Desert and we

want to know why,’ explains Eilidh MacAskill, founder of Glasgow collective Fish and Game and co-creator of the show.

Two characters, Claude and Maud the latter played by MacAskill guide you through the most influential figures in queer history, asking whether the Sandi Toksvigs and Sue Perkins are as good as it gets for gay role models today. Under no circumstances will this be a dull ‘graphs and PowerPoint’ type affair, for anyone who lost interest as soon as the word ‘history’ was raised.

‘It’s a cabaret set in the 1920s but it jumps through time, like Bill and

Ted’s Excellent Lesbian Adventure,’ MacAskill says. ‘We wanted to make it a fun, celebratory, ridiculous night out something that’s titillating but also makes you think. ‘We were trying to think about whether younger women need to know

who’s come before them or whether that’s a bit redundant now. We’ll look at cultural representations of lesbians in the past that haven’t been very sexual or exciting and ask what else is out there.’

The show, which was co-created by RSAMD graduate Rosana Cade, comes from a fun, feminist perspective. ‘Alice Toklas and Gertrude Stein had a giant poodle called Basket, so we’ve written a song about that although how that describes the lesbian condition, I’m not quite sure . . .’ (Lauren Mayberry) Strange Hungers, The Arches, Glasgow, 565 1000, Thu 27–Sat 29 Oct, 7.30pm, £9 (£7).
