2011 EATING & DRINKING GUIDE HITLISTED RESTAURANTS

GLASGOW 46 THE LIST 15 Dec 2011–5 Jan 2012

THE BUTTERFLY AND THE PIG 153 Bath Street, Glasgow 0141 221 7711 thebutterflyandthepig.com A quirky, kitschy, utterly charming basement pub on Bath Street. Expect wonky furniture (good luck getting a seat though), very reasonably priced carafes of house wine, and some of the best freshly prepared food in the city.

FRATELLI SARTI 121 Bath Street, Glasgow 0141 204 0440 sarti.co.uk Authentic ingredients and traditional dishes across two city centre locations produce a lovingly realised taste of Italy. The Wellington Street branch has shelves of hard-to-find Italian produce on sale, while the Renfield Street version restaurant feels grander, but with the same bustling charm.

ART LOVERS CAFÉ 10 Dumbreck Road, Glasgow 0141 353 4779 houseforanartlover.co.uk A justifiably popular spot, serving sophisticated daytime food in an elegant setting. The view over Bellahouston Park is delightful, and with menu options including seared scallops and breast of duckling, it’s an ideal place to linger over a special lunch.

EDINBURGH

L'ESCARGOT BLEU 56 Broughton Street, Edinburgh 0131 557 1600 lescargotbleu.co.uk In a friendly, bric-a-brac style interior on Broughton Street, sample slices of cuisine from across France using top Scottish produce and a few unique imports look out for the delightful macarons. Sourcing is so good there’s a showcase deli downstairs.

WEDGWOOD 267 Canongate, Edinburgh 0131 558 8737 wedgwoodtherestaurant.co.uk This elegant, special occasion restaurant in the Old Town serves consistently excellent Scottish food that you can be happy to enjoy and proud to show off. The imaginative menu relies heavily on well-chosen local produce, right down to the wild foraged greens.

HANAM'S 3 Johnston Terrace, Edinburgh 0131 225 1329 hanams.com This Kurdish restaurant near the Castle well deserves its place as an established fixture on Edinburgh’s international cuisine scene. Authentic flavours, cheerfully airy premises and shisha pipes make the place a hit with tourists and locals.
