For some time, artist Sarah Roberts has been using the slime mould Physarum polycephalum as a collaborator in her work; slime moulds are multicellular organisms that behave in complex and interesting ways, the different cells reacting with each other in ways that simulate the ways brain cells operate. Exhibition of new work by Sheffield artist James Clarkson, taking as its title the celebrated line from Lautréamont’s delirious 1869 proto- surrealist, proto-punk, proto-Goth, proto- conceptual novel Les Chants du Maldoror, ‘as beautiful [...] as the chance encounter on a dissecting table of a sewing machine and an umbrella.’ Clarkson combines disparate objects and images to create art-historical references.
