SOS (self organising systems)

Saxophonist Evan Parker has been a titan of improvisation for half a century. Following collaborations with Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra, Parker returns to Scotland at the behest of Edinburgh’s ever exploratory Dialogues Festival for a new piece for ensemble players culled from all strands of improv. Enabled by a PRSF/Creative Scotland Beyond Borders award, a version of SOS premiered at Belfast’s Sonorities festival. This new variation on what looks set to be an ever-rolling theme features American noise percussionist Fritz Welch, German double bassist John Eckhardt, electronicists Owen Green and Martin Parker and contemporary classical clarinettist Peter Furniss. A solo set by Eckhardt, derived from his Xylobiant album, precedes what promises to be a fascinating meeting of minds and musics. (Neil Cooper) Wee Red Bar, Edinburgh College of Art, Wed 13 Jun.
