ARTBeat ROB KENNEDY

Rob Kennedy’s exhibition is a ‘solo’ show that includes work by other artists, shifting the focus away from biographical aspects of an artist’s work. In the spirit of how the exhibition was put together, this Q&A has been answered by Rob and the other artists in the show What was the first exhibition you went to see? It’s a long time ago, but perhaps the inaugural exhibition at Paul Durand-Ruel Gallery, 168 New Bond Street, London, 1870. What was your first paid job as an artist? Screen printing T- shirts after school, for an art teacher. What kind of music do you listen to while you’re working? ‘Miagetegoran Yoru No Hoshi Wo’ by Ground Zero. What are the best things about opening nights? You get to see the work when the gallery is really lively and noisy. And, erm . . . there’s also a lot of nice looking boys. Do you read reviews of your work? Oh yes, of course, but only the bad ones. Which living artist should be better known than they currently are? Hmm . . . I can’t think of a live one but a relatively recent deceased one I could mention would be Hagop Sandaldjian. What has been your career highlight to date? Appearing on stage at the Aldwych Theatre, London, circa 1992. What is your favourite work of art? Well, as I can’t think of anything glib or cool I’ll have to say Duchamp’s, ‘Étant donnés’. What advice would you give to your younger self? Actually I’m a lot younger than I look but it would be the same as most people I guess. Listen more, make sure you have a lot more sex, and crazy girls are not all they’re cracked up to be so be careful. Rob Kennedy: Is there anything to do here, is there anything to see?, CCA, Glasgow, until Sat 2 Jun.
