NEIL PENNYCOOK, frontman and singer- songwriter of melancholic folksters Meursault, reveals some of the band’s on-the- road eating habits

What time is breakfast? The five minutes between waking up and getting in the tour van.

Tea or coffee? Coffee. Smoking or non-smoking? Smoking.

Sweet or savoury snacks? Savoury. Anything peanut flavoured . . . except peanuts. What food do you miss when you tour? Melon. Except when melon is on the rider, in which case a different kind of melon.

Who’s the best cook you know? That would be Sam, our drummer. What’s on your rider? Cheese, fruit, bread . . . Nesquik (this is a real deal breaker).

Which country/city has the best food? Zurich, Switzerland. Cabbage and chestnuts, oh yes.

Do you eat out a lot? On tour? Yeah, it kind of comes with the territory.

Do you drink onstage? Only Nesquik strawberry, or no show. Meursault are having an album launch at Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh, Sat 7 Jul, and also playing AwayGame, Isle of Eigg, Fri 20–Sun 22 Jul and ThistlyFest, Belhaven (near Dunbar), Sat 28 Jul. See a review of their new album, Something For The Weakened, page 90.
