The interior is warmly lit, welcoming and relaxed, and backs onto a child-friendly, leafy suburban garden. The menu presents French variations on Scottish ingredients: such as scallops among a salad of asparagus, duck breast and walnuts.

Amongst the traders at this community market, Breadshare Bakery sell fresh bread, Jojo’s Danish Bakery provide macaroons, brownies and pastries, and Home Ground Coffee Co will sort you out with espressos. The tramworks caused them to relocate from the St Mary’s site to the Grassmarket for August. From Sat 4th Aug, there’ll be a market every Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 6.45pm.

TUPINIQUIM The Green Police Box, Mid- dle Meadow Walk, Lauriston Place, Edinburgh, EH1 9AU, tupiniquim.co.uk From inside a tiny police box at the top of Middle Meadow Walk come gluten- free crêpes, fruit smoothies, coffee and Brazilian açai and guarana sorbets. Load up on freshly squeezed pear, ginger and lime juice, or Brazil nut and yoghurt smoothies. If you’re lucky they’ll be space to sit on one of the stools beside the kiosk.

CITY ART CENTRE CAFÉ City Art Centre, 1 Market Street, EH1 1DE, 0131 226 4965, edinburghmuseums.org.uk A handy spot to head for, if you’re in town and the weather takes a turn for the worse. The café is run by the same people who run the Fruitmarket Gallery Café across the road, and the Storytelling Centre and St Giles’ Cathedral. Choose from warm tarts with colourful salads, cheese and meat platters and deli-filled rolls. Bakes, cakes and coffee are better than average.

MEADOWBERRY FROZEN YOGHURT 10 Barclay Terrace, meadowberry. co.uk This newly opened fro-yo spot makes yogurt with natural ingredients. It’s either fat-free or low-fat depending on the toppings, so you can decide how indulgent you want to be, while getting your fix of calcium and protein. Their new Meadows outlet is run by Karolina, who grew up in America eating frozen yogurt, but was surprised there wasn’t a fro-yo shop in Edinburgh.

HEART BUCHANAN 380 Byres Road, Glasgow, G12 8AR, 0141 339 4166, heartbuchanan.co.uk This popular deli-café is a stones throw from Glasgow’s beautiful Botanic gardens, so one to bear in mind if you’re considering picnicking. Those with a sweet tooth will find a great selection of tarts made by Ayrshire firm Proof is in the Pudding. The lunch menu changes daily and the café also does a takeaway meal deal of sandwich, drink and crisps for just shy of a fiver.
