The Amazing Spider-Man (12A) ●●●●● (Marc Webb, US, 2012) Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans. 136min. Spin-off from the franchise exploring the story of young Peter Parker as he struggles to come to terms with being abandoned by his parents and battling with supervillain The Lizard. General release. The Angels’ Share (15) ●●●●● (Ken Loach, UK/France, 2012) Roger Allam, John Henshaw, Daniel Portman. 101min. A young father who has done time struggles to rebuild his life before discovering an instinct for whisky tasting and turns this to his financial advantage. Loach is straining hard to be accessible, but it feels forced and condescending. General release. Angèle and Tony (Angèle et Tony) (15) ●●●●● (Alix Delaporte, France, 2010) Clotilde Hesme, Grégory Gadebois, Evelyne Didi. 88min. Hesme and Gadebois are very good as the unlikely lovers in Delaporte’s debut feature, a beguiling and slow-moving story set in a remote Normandy fishing village. Filmhouse, Edinburgh. The Apartment (PG) ●●●●● (Billy Wilder, US, 1960) Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine, Fred MacMurray. 125min. CC Baxter (Lemmon) sublets his bachelor pad to his philandering boss Sheldrake (MacMurray), only to regret it when he gets designs on elfin elevator girl Miss Kubelik (MacLaine). A breezy, sardonic approach to themes of infidelity and adultery results in a brightly shining treat. Filmhouse, Edinburgh; Glasgow Film Theatre. Avengers Assemble (12A) ●●●●● (Joss Whedon, US, 2012) Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson. 142min. Big blockbuster superhero action as Iron

Genius of Hitchcock: The Lodger

Live from the Barbican comes this ‘cinecast’ of Alfred Hitchcock’s silent thriller The Lodger, with a live soundtrack by Nitin Sawhney (composer and musician known for his jazz and electronica inspired music) and the London Symphony Orchestra. Made in 1928, this story of a serial killer on the loose in fog-shrouded London saw Hitchcock introduce themes that he would return to again and again throughout his career (sex, murder and individuals on the run). The event kicks off with a pre-show reel of mini-docs and is followed by a Q&A with Nitin Sawhney. GFT, Glasgow, Sat 21 Jul.

Man, Thor, The Hulk, Captain America, Black Widow and Hawkeye team up to save the world. General release. Back To The Future (PG) ●●●●● (Robert Zemeckis, US, 1985) Michael J Fox, Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover. 116min. Deservedly popular time-travelling fantasy adventure. Sloans, Glasgow; Cameo, Edinburgh. Batman Begins (12A) (Christopher Nolan, US, 2005) Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Katie Holmes. 139min. Deeply flawed but satisfyingly dark and

realistic adaptation of both Bob Kane’s original strips and Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One. The script is pretty awful but at least it partially revitalised the ailing franchise. Selected screenings ahead of the release of The Dark Knight Rises. Beauty and the Beast (U) (Gary Trousdale, Kirk Wise, US, 1991) Voices of Paige O’Hara, Robby Benson, Richard White. 84min. The first animated film ever to get an Oscar nomination for Best Picture, and a family classic. Vue Ocean, Edinburgh; Vue Omni, Edinburgh. The Big Lebowski (18) ●●●●● (Joel Coen, US, 1997) Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Julianne Moore. 113min. Cult LA noir in which 70s hippy throwback Jeff ‘The Dude’ Lebowski (Bridges) is drawn into the sordid affairs of his millionaire namesake. Virtuoso comedy. Filmhouse, Edinburgh. Billa 2 (18) (Chakri Toleti, India, 2012) Ajith Kumar, Parvathy Omanakuttan, Bruna Abdullah. 129min. Tamil crime thriller. Selected release. Bol Bachchan (12A) (Rohit Shetty, India, 2012) Ajay Devgn, Abhishek Bachchan, Asin Thottumkal, Prachi Desai. 149min. Mistaken identities abound in this Bollywood comedy. Selected release. Broadway Danny Rose (PG) (Woody Allen, US, 1984) Woody Allen, Mia Farrow, Nick Apollo Forte. 82min. Allen is on splendid form as manager of a stable of bottom-of-the-bill nightclub acts, who finally has a chance at the big time when a fading crooner achieves a sudden upsurge in popularity. Beautifully controlled narrative, sparkling screenplay and excellent performance. Part of the Woody’s Goodies season. Filmhouse, Edinburgh. Brokeback Mountain (15) (Ang Lee, 2005) Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal. 134min. Lee’s intimate epic poignantly charts a furtive relationship between two ranch hands over the course of several decades. In a strong cast Ledger is truly outstanding, imbuing his inarticulate character with an aching humanity. Less a gay Western than a universally resonant love story. Part of the Summer of Love season. GFT, Glasgow.
