Music HITLIST THE BEST ROCK, POP, JAZZ & FOLK

Damien Jurado Gorgeous, plaintive songs from the gentle Seattle rocker. He’s touring with North Carolina psych-folkers Megafaun just now, before heading back to the States to play some dates with Sharon Van Etten. The Arches, Glasgow, Thu 16 Aug. (Rock & Pop)

Meursault Neil Pennycook (pictured) and co play material from their new Something For the Weakened album, which we called ‘their most cohesive, gorgeous and forceful album yet’. Stereo, Glasgow, Wed 15 Aug. (Rock & Pop) Toots & the Maytals A big influence on folks like The Specials and Amy Winehouse, Toots Hibbert and the band he formed in Kingston, Jamaica in 1961 bring their blend of ska, reggae, gospel and rock. O2 ABC, Glasgow, Fri 10 Aug. (Rock & Pop)

The One Ensemble An album launch of Oriole: a genre mash of ‘seasick lament, jaunty medievalisms and doom riffs’ from the Glasgow quartet. The Old Hairdressers, Glasgow, Sun 12 Aug. (Rock & Pop) Niteworks Skye-raised, now Glasgow-based folk/ dance act. This is the point where techno-pop meets trad Scottish. Think Hot Chip, then gently fade in an electric bagpipe. You’re there. The Arches, Glasgow, Fri 10 Aug. (Piping Live)

Beezer Seriously, though. It’s ‘Eurasia’s only Weezer tribute’. And damn, these boys are good! Belhaven Spiegeltent, North Berwick Harbour, Sat 11 Aug, part of Fringe by the Sea. (Rock & Pop)

Ballad of Mable Wong Local instrumental rock, soundtracking a short film by the band’s guitarist. CCA, Glasgow, Thu 9 Aug. (Rock & Pop)

That Fucking Tank, with Guns or Knives and Cutty’s Gym Want to know what ‘trousers aff baritone guitar’ sounds like? Now is your chance. Stereo, Glasgow, Wed 15 Aug. (Rock & Pop)

6 Day Riot singer, TAMARA SCHLESINGER, launches her debut solo album this month, a soft pop number full of layers of her own interwoven a cappella vocals. Cider, wine and black coffee are the secret behind her vocal gymnastics, apparently . . .

What time is breakfast? As late as possible I like my bed.

Tea or coffee? Black coffee. Always. Smoking or non-smoking? Non-smoking.

Sweet or savoury snacks? I love sweet snacks, and I have little control when it comes to eating them. What food do you miss when you tour? A nice home-cooked meal.

Who’s the best cook you know? My mum. I always love playing in Glasgow because I get to stay in my family home for the night and get a good feed.

What’s on your rider? Usually wine, vodka and plenty of junk food. Which country / city has the best food? On tour, I’d say the best food we’ve had is on the Isle of Sark (a tiny Channel Island) where they fed us freshly caught lobster and home-brewed cider.

Do you eat out a lot? Yeah I guess so, if you’re out playing gigs a lot you end up having little time at home to cook and eat. Do you drink onstage? Yeah. I quite like having a glass of wine by my side when I’m onstage.

Tamara plays Stereo, 15 Aug, supporting Meursault, and her album, ‘The Procession’, is released on 6 Aug on Tantrum Records.
