TECHNO SUBSTANCE A techno assault from Destroyaz and Rolando

Adam Richardson, promoter at Substance explains how he and his colleagues are celebrating their 50th club event. ‘We were very mindful of organising a 50th Substance party which was both special and representative of the club over the past six years. As such, we’re bringing in three artists for a Berlin-Detroit-NYC- Edinburgh soundclash.

‘We have a UK debut from The Destroyaz a dual live show from NYC-born, adopted Berliner Bill Youngman and Edinburgh’s Neil Landstrumm: two very experienced producers who have never stayed still and continually evolved their sound. Neil has played for us a few times, and in that respect it’s fitting for him to be involved in the 50th party. Bill’s appearance is long overdue. The Destroyaz set will be, in its simplest terms, down and dirty, bass heavy club music exciting, unpredictable, riot-inducing stuff, which ducks and dives through loads of styles. Properly unique, properly underground.

‘This will be complemented nicely by Detroit-raised Rolando. To say this man has a solid CV would be an understatement, having been a member of the massively influential Underground Resistance collective and author of one of the biggest and most played techno tracks ever, ‘Knights of the Jaguar’. He has made something of a comeback in recent times, with releases on the highly regarded Delsin and Ostgut Ton, and a three-monthly residency at Berlin’s Berghain/Panorama Bar probably the most lauded club in the world right now, testament to his slick technical DJ skills. Fitting with the Festival 5am license, he will take things into deep, dark late night territory.’ (Interview by Henry Northmore) Bongo Club, 558 7604, 10 Aug, midnight–5am, £10.
