Documentary about Frédéric Bourdin, a 20-something French drifter who successfully passed himself off as a missing American teenager. Bart Layton’s punchy film rams home the sheer unlikeliness of the story, letting us experience Bourdin’s extraordinary persuasiveness as well as his scary absence of compassion. See review page 54. In contemporary Lisbon, kind-hearted Pilar becomes concerned for her paranoid neighbour Aurora; this starts an investigation that goes back to Aurora’s childhood in Africa. Gomes’ wonderfully cinematic film is really two films in one, conversing with each other on themes of childhood and colonialism.
