Crate DIGGING

Edinburgh techno night SUBSTANCE are celebrating their sixth birthday with a special back- to-back set from Blawan and Jackmaster. We caught up with resident Gavin Richardson for a taster of what’s been on his decks over the last few months.

First up is Cassegrain & Tin Man ‘Sear’ (Killekill), the pick of the bunch on their Carnal EP. Killekill has been one of the stand- out labels for us over the last year, and they have a special tenth release coming soon.

Blawan one of our birthday

guests is absolutely killing it just now, both with his studio productions and his sets. Blawan ‘Why They Hide Their Bodies Under My Garage?’ (Hinge Finger), is deservedly getting loads of attention, but the other tracks on the His He She and She EP are also quality. Fresh, raw, direct UK techno for 2012. Third up is some advanced acid action on Jackmaster’s Numbers label from Lory D ‘B-L-132 Acid’ (Numbers). My pick from the Stange Days Vol 2 EP; a clever, tight, intense track that builds and builds.

Fourth, Theo Parrish’s ‘Black Mist (Extended Version)’ (Running Back) a booming kick, shuffling clicky hats and loud growling bass locks you in. Works extremely well in the club.

Fifth, Chicagoans Ike Release

and Hakim Murphy deliver the goods as Innerspace Halflife ‘Wind’ (M>O>S Recordings), with its analogue acid charm, clinical percussion and ‘things- ain’t-quite-right’ melody. The last one has been around

for a little longer, and has been so big over the summer. One of the many aliases of Rene Pawlowitz is Head High ‘Rave (Dirt Mix)’ (Power House). Another example of the new-old golden-era techno and house which is being made at the minute. Guaranteed to make you grin from ear to ear. Substance, Bongo Club, Edinburgh, Fri 5 Oct.
