Until now, Glasgay! has left film relatively alone, focusing more on a vibrant programme of theatre, visual arts and music. This year, however, they unveil a revitalised film strand in collaboration with Glasgow Film Theatre and Lock Up Your Daughters.
Glasgay! producer and curator Steven Thomson explains: ‘Part of
my drive in this programme is trying to find clever ways of referencing how our families are acceptable and different and, dare I say, normal, celebrating diversity and highlighting struggles across the world.’ I Am (pictured, CCA, 30 Oct) is a documentary by lesbian filmmaker
Sonali Gulati looking at the changing rights of LGBT individuals in India. Call Me Kuchu (GFT, 23 Oct) is about the first openly gay man in Uganda, where many young gay men have been imprisoned, tortured and executed for their ‘illegal’ sexuality.
Opening movie The Perfect Family (GFT, 15 Oct) features Kathleen Turner as a housewife nominated for a Catholic Woman of the Year Award. ‘It very much chimes with the battle we’re having between the gay community and the church, where we are constantly receiving messages of intolerance and lack of acceptance of the progress of our civil rights,’ Thomson says. Lock Up Your Daughters will curate two days at the CCA with short
films produced by local and international filmmakers (2 & 3 Nov).
