Music ROCK&POP

NEW VENUES

GLASGOW

From shut downs and takeovers to new community- driven projects, Glasgow’s live music scene is in a state of transition an exciting one. Here, we profile some of the emerging mainstays and potential leading lights in Glasgow’s musical underground The Glad Café (pictured) (1006a Pollokshaws Road, Shawlands, G41 2HG)

Three years in the making, the recently-opened Glad Café has reinvigorated the Shawlands area of Glasgow’s Southside. Run entirely by volunteers, this bar/ café/venue also uses its profits to fund local music projects and tuition, while playing host to some of the most exciting and engaging local acts around.

Kinning Park Complex (43 Cornwall Street, Kinning Park, G41 1BA) Also in Southside right next to Kinning Park Tube this beautiful old school building turned community centre has become the unlikely setting for some of Glasgow’s most obscure and eclectic musical events. From the recent Music is the Music Language festival to African shredders Group Inerane and regular DIY punk shows, this grassroots, community-run venue is fast becoming an alternative to the basement bar. The Hug & Pint/New Captain’s (185 Great Western Road, G4 9EB/ TBC)

The Captain’s Rest left its followers bereft with grief when it shut its doors in July. That is, for about a day, until it was announced that not only were The Captain’s team set to re-open under a new guise in the city centre this autumn but also, their old beloved West End music hub was to be transformed, care of The Arches, into The Hug & Pint on September 28. Like losing a limb and growing two back, it would seem we will soon be spoilt for choice. (Ryan Drever) To read about changes to music venues in Edinburgh, see page 85.
