Profile SALLY POTTER
Born 1949, London, UK Background Started out making short experimental i lms as part of the London Filmmakers Co-op in the late 60s. She later worked as a choreographer and theatre director before returning to i lmmaking. In 1992 she made her mark on the i lmmaking map with Orlando, starring Tilda Swinton. It was nominated for two Academy Awards. Subsequent i lms include The Man Who Cried (2000), The Tango Lesson (1996) and Rage (2009) – the i rst feature i lm to premiere on mobile phones. What she’s doing now Potter’s latest i lm, Ginger and Rosa, is about the friendship between two teenage girls in 1960s London and stars Elle Fanning, Christina Hendricks and Annette Benning. It premiered at Toronto Film Festival in September. On portraying the relationships in the i lm ‘Whether people recognise themselves, or i nd something quite different from their own experience, I wanted them to see the complexity, the ambiguity of these relationships. We are so often encouraged to view the world as if it’s black and white.’ On working with young actors ‘We underestimate young actors as workers. Extremely young actors can be incredibly sophisticated and professional. I don’t think that your quantity of years corresponds to your level of depth – unfortunately!’ On cinematographer Robbie Ryan ‘The way he works is very mobile and very free. We worked hard on the feel and the look of the period, but apart from that there’s really no formality: he follows the action.
