PREVIEW FUN DAY COMMONWEALTH FAMILY FESTIVAL City Halls, Glasgow, Sat 20 Oct

It may be nearly two years away, but now that the Olympics are fast becoming a happy memory, it’s time for the Commonwealth Games to step into the spotlight. And in the run-up to Glasgow 2014, there’ll be no rest for that happy thistle-headed chap Clyde, as he pops up at events across the country to promote the Games. First up on his date list, is the Commonwealth Family Festival, a

day of free performances and workshops for toddlers to teenagers. Taking over the Old Fruitmarket and City Halls, the Festival will feature a diverse range of performances and workshops, all inspired by the Commonwealth countries. ‘It’s building awareness of the Games,’ explains co-ordinator, Maggie Singleton. ‘And one of the reasons for having Clyde the mascot along, is we’re trying to highlight the 17 different sports that will be in the Commonwealth Games.’

Alongside the sporty elements, families can enjoy Half Moon young

people’s theatre, with their Australian-themed show, A Roo in My Suitcase (pictured), Toto Tales will deliver some traditional African tales, while Tigerstyle send a beat pulsing through the building with Dhol drumming, beatboxing and bhangra dancing. Artists will be running hands-on craft activities, with storytelling

for under 5s, and a fusion ceilidh for all-comers to join in backed by Scottish and African musicians. And, during this free extravaganza, you can also learn the 71 nations that will be sending athletes to the Games, courtesy of architectural group Stone Opera.

‘They’ll be compiling a big map which will have all the

Commonwealth countries on it,’ explains Singleton, ‘and we’ll also have an artist who’s going to write all the names of the countries in Gaelic, and then children can make their own signs for it.’ (Kelly Apter)
