First class The List are delighted to support this year’s Jill Todd Award

W hen budding photographer Jill Todd tragically died in 2010, after receiving a first-class honours degree in Photography and Film from Edinburgh Napier University the year before, her family and friends were determined to do something in her memory, and this year launch The Jill Todd Photography Award, a new national photography award for Scotland.

The Award will hold its inaugural private show at Whitespace on Fri 2 Nov, in Edinburgh, showcasing the three front-runners selected from an open submission to the JTPA, with the winner being announced on the night. The exhibition will then run at the gallery until Sun 11 Nov.

The

shortlisted trio

includes Caroline

Alexander (image top), Nick Paton (middle) and Tamara and Yoshi Kametani (bottom). Alexander’s project ‘Belonging’ explores the feelings experienced when leaving home; Paton’s project ‘Inherited’ takes the theme of memory and loss as its starting point, while Tamara and Yoshi Kametani’s project ‘In search of the Crying Lady’ explores the role of professional mourners. As well as prizes of £500 for 1st place, £300 for 2nd and £200 for 3rd, the winners will be given the opportunity to take part in a nine-month mentoring programme.

1 Phantom of the Opera An interesting choice of shape

surely it takes more effort to buy a whole mask and cut a bit out? Is your cheek that attractive?

2 MF Doom Inspired by Marvel’s Dr Doom, the

rapper’s mask has barely left his visage since he donned it in 1999. The ‘MF’ stands for ‘Metal Face’, by the way.

3 Zorro Zorro’s eye-mask leaves half his face

unconcealed and yet, much like Clark Kent’s glasses, seems to function perfectly as a method of disguise. Bizarre.

4 Rubberbandits The Irish hip hop comedy duo both wear

plastic carrier bags over their heads. Which is highly dangerous, and therefore slightly sexy. Kinda.

5 Daft Punk Believe it or not, maskless pics of Daft Punk do

exist online. They’re just a million years old and not as cool as robot faces.
