15 NOV–13 DEC 2012 | LIST.CO.UK CONTENTS

Y ou might have noticed we’ve had a bit of a face lift. We’ve freshened up our design and, drawing on elements from the very first issue of The List back in 1985, have brought in some bold headings and chunky lines. No sign of Clint Eastwood this time,

though (The List’s very first cover star).

Instead we have Hannah McGill looking at the story behind Booker Prize-winning novel Life of Pi (page 16). If early reviews are anything to go by, the film adaptation looks set to be one of the hits of the year. Unlike most blockbusters, however, it might not have made it to the big screen at all had it not been for the role played by Edinburgh publishers Canongate. From epic films to epic tasks: this issue we embarked on The Big Takeaway a mammoth challenge for our food reviewers who sampled over 50 takeaways across Glasgow and Edinburgh in two sittings. See the best of the bunch on page 11.

And don’t forget to browse our Christmas Wish List (enclosed): it’s packed with 40-odd pages of beautiful gift ideas, many from local and independent shops and the best events. No naff tinsel or tunes in sight, we promise.

LIFE OF PI It’s set to be one of the biggest blockbusters of the season: a Booker-award winning novel transformed into a special effects extravaganza with heart and humanity, directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Ang Lee. Yet before Yann Martel’s novel was picked up by Edinburgh’s Canongate Books, it seemed doomed to obscurity. We chart the rise of the story Barack Obama described as ‘an elegant proof of God’ on page 16. Illustration by Tomislav Torjanac. 22

THE BIG TAKEAWAY ALASDAIR GRAY

100 of the best takeaways in Edinburgh and Glasgow, devoured by our Eating & Drinking team (and some lucky readers) in just two sittings. They said we were mad. They were probably right. Read an extract from the artist, author and general all-round great chap’s brand new, comprehensive short story collection, the appropriately titled Every Short Story 1952–2012.
