‘B aby, it’s cold outside,’ but this year it’s well worth wrapping up, stepping out and enjoying Scotland’s Winter Festivals. From Tall Ships in Glasgow to the l ume ride in Inverness there is something to l oat everyone’s boat this St Andrew’s Day.
Scotland’s Winter Festivals is a celebration of Scottish music, arts, entertainment, food and drink honouring St Andrew’s Day, Christmas, Hogmanay and Burns Night. This year’s programme is packed with activities to keep you, friends and family singing, laughing, dancing and exploring throughout the winter months. The successful Visit for Free programme has been expanded this year to include sports centres as well as visitor attractions and community events. Famous attractions including Edinburgh’s Our Dynamic Earth, Inverness’s Highland Wildlife Park, Aberdeen’s Sports Village, Glasgow’s Tall Ships and many more are offering free or discounted entry. Restaurants, cafes and supermarkets up and down the country are lending their support to St Andrew’s Day celebrations by promoting the very best seasonal ingredients from Scotland’s larder. From Glasgow’s famous Ubiquitous Chip to Edinburgh’s delicious Cuckoo Bakery every palate can salute St Andrew. This year’s programme also includes more supported special events than ever before, designed to encourage everyone – whatever age or interest – to get involved in three key Scottish cultural dates. A St Andrew’s Day highlight will be Scotland Sings, a celebration of community singing that will see choirs take to the streets across the country with events in Edinburgh, Dundee, Perth and Paisley. Following last year’s popular event, Edinburgh Castle Esplanade will be the setting for a St Andrew’s Day spectacular, Celebrations at the Castle – an evening of contemporary dance, lights and i reworks.
