I t’s here: The Hot 100, our snapshot of the most talented and influential individuals and groups who’ve made their mark on Scottish culture in the last year. So what stands out in 2012? Without doubt the Olympics made a huge impact: Emeli Sandé (who
performed at both the opening and closing ceremonies) features highly in our list, as do two gold medal-winning sports stars. In the movies a certain flame-haired princess made a splash – there are three names in our Hot 100 who were involved in Pixar’s fairytale Brave.
It’s also a list that shows there’s a degree of change in the air: Vicky Featherstone leaves her post at the National Theatre of Scotland and Katrina Brown departs Glasgow International, while Chris Fujiwara took up the post of artistic director at Edinburgh Film Festival. Meanwhile, lingering over the future of the cultural landscape as a whole is the current state of Creative Scotland. A turbulent year has come to a close with the resignation of the organisation’s chief executive Andrew Dixon. What changes lie ahead are uncertain but the in-depth and far-reaching discussions that the past months’ controversies have generated within Scotland’s arts community could well be a very positive thing.
